Our Why
Birmingham Jumpstart was founded on April 26, 2018, to continue education in Alabama. We serve as a public resource for native English Adult Literacy, GED Preparation and Exam Completion, ESL/ESOL (specific classes designed for adult ELL students & English Language Acquisition), Family Literacy (parent and child attend class sessions together), Literacy Workshops, and Zoom Reading Classes.
In Birmingham, a variety of programs primarily focus on literacy acquisition for children. However, our program places a concentrated and acute focus on adults and improving their literacy and academic skills.
Always Remember Your “Why!”
Alabama is ranked 47th in higher education. Our state is currently trailing in consistent positive educational outcomes, which negatively influences our community. Lower education rates create higher probabilities of poverty, depression, crime, and incarceration. Incarceration without sufficient rehabilitation increases recidivism. In Birmingham, the total number of homicide victims reached 144 in 2022. To find a number that high, for example, you would have to leap back 30 years when there were 141 homicides recorded. Birmingham Jumpstart is determined to help adults acquire the needed skills to comprehend the English language. Our goal is to foster an empowering, education-based community for our city. We believe that through these efforts of investing in people, we will create a safer, healthier, and more literate community for everyone.
As we share the gift of literacy and adult education, we impactfully change people’s lives each week in our communities.
Birmingham Jumpstart’s classroom-style learning platform offers free materials, quality engagement time, safe spaces for growth, and practical social connections to enhance a student’s learning. Donating your time and/or monetary gifts empowers a person to acquire the necessary skills to reach their educational goals. Your impact will positively affect an adult learner to become better equipped to read a medical prescription, give a young adult a second chance at obtaining their GED for trade school or continuing education, or assist an immigrant in learning English. We maintain the standard that whoever comes to us for aid in academics will receive our undivided attention. Partner with us today as we seek to eradicate adult illiteracy and improve education in Birmingham, Alabama.
