Our Why
Birmingham Jumpstart was founded on April 26, 2018, to continue education in Alabama.
We serve as a public resource for:
- Native English Adult Literacy
- ESL (specific classes designed for adult English Language Learners)
- GED Preparation and Exam Completion
- Speech improvement (Critique Your Speech)
- Justice-impacted learners
- Building A Strong Financial Foundation, taught by Jazlyn Sanders
- Digital Literacy
- Family Literacy (parent and child attend class sessions together)
- Workplace Literacy (Class Sessions conducted on-site at specific business locations)
- Virtual Vocabulary Enrichment Class
In Birmingham, many programs are geared towards helping children acquire literacy. However, our program takes a targeted approach by focusing specifically on enhancing literacy and academic skills for teens and adults. Our “ABC to GED” techniques allow us to empower teens and adults in our communities daily.
Always Remember Your “Why!”
Alabama faces a critical education challenge: Our state ranks 45th in overall education, and meanwhile our lower education rates have lead to a myriad of associated problems including poverty, depression, crime, increase levels of mental health concerns, and incarceration. Incarceration without sufficient rehabilitation increases recidivism.
Birmingham experienced an alarming surge in homicides. The previous record of 148 homicides was set way back in 1933. However, as of December 18th, 2024, Birmingham surpassed this 91-year old record by reaching its 149th homicide. This highlights the need for positive and impactful change in our communities.
Birmingham Jumpstart is fighting back: We empower adults by providing English language class sessions that foster a supportive community that prioritizes learning and growth. We offer safe spaces, quality engagement, and practical social connections to accelerate a student’s progress.
Your contribution matters: By donating your time and talent, or treasure, you directly impact lives. Your donation helps adults read medical instructions (understanding their prescriptions correctly), pursue GEDs, or learn English, which in turn opens doors to better jobs, healthcare, and community integration.
Every learner receives personalized learning and our undivided attention as we work towards a more literate and thriving Birmingham.
Join us today: Partner with Birmingham Jumpstart to eradicate adult illiteracy and build a brighter future for our city. Together, we can break the cycle and empower individuals to reach their full potential.
As we share the gift of literacy and adult education, we are impactfully changing people’s lives each week in Birmingham, Alabama.
